Yes true: Retained placenta usually causes persistant cramping and bleeding and wouldn't affect your milk supply. However, if you can save some of the tissue in a clean zip lock, your gyn can send it to pathology to confirm what it is. This might just be membranous endometrium. In addition check a pregnancy test as this could be a new pregnancy. Breast feeding isn't protecting you anymore.
