What happens when someone calls 911 because they are feeling suicidal?

Dr. John Moranville answered

Specializes in Psychiatry

Depends: The 911 operator will try to assess the risk and immediacy of the caller's intent. They may encourage you to go to the nearest hospital or clinic, refer you to a suicide hotline, or send emergency personnel to you. Suicide is an acute psychiatric emergency and is always taken very seriously. Life is worth living and help is available. Medications? Psychotherapy? Both? Will help
