The infection: will generally attack both the upper respiratory tract and nasal mucosa at the same time. Mucosal inflammation and swelling can cause blockage of the pathways that drain the sinuses and middle ear. Thus, symptoms of pressure build up in the sinuses and ears are common with URI.
