A member asked:

Why do lymph nodes have to be removed during some cancer treatments?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Staging / treatment: Lymph node removal might be part of surgical management, for instance in head/neck cancers. But examination of lymph nodes is also important for staging purposes, to see if the tumor has spread to the lymph nodes. The stage of a cancer indicates whether a tumor is early or advanced, and oncologists use this information to determine what the appropriate therapy should be.
