Why can't an addict stop their craving if what they crave is something the body doesn't need?

Addiction: It's the nature of addiction: their brain has become fooled into thinking that they need it, and won't let up. That's the nature of what addictive drugs do. They mess with the brain such that the brain comes to experience the drug as necessary, and craves it, even though it is otherwise not necessary.
