Throughout the body: HIV resides mostly in certain cells active in the immune system. Those cells are located in all organs of the body, but their greatest numbers -- and therefore the main sites where HIV can be found -- are in lymph nodes, spleen, liver, bone marrow, blood, and the lining of the intestines. There also are high concentrations in the genital tract, which helps explain sexual transmission.
