Is it normal for babies to have bow legs?

4 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Yes: Most babies are born "bow-legged" because of their position in the womb. Babies who were in breech position for most of the pregnancy, tend to have straighter legs, but can have problems with their hips. Bow legs are usually not treated, and will straighten as the child walks. If a child becomes more bow legged as they grow, more investigation is required.

Yes: Newborns are folded tightly in the womb and the rounding of the walls will produce a transient rounding or leg bowing. After baby begins to cruise, the forces of gravity begin to remodel the legs for upright posture. There is often a transient inward or knock knee appearance around 4, with straightening by 6-7.
