Yes, possible but...: Highly unlikely, of course, but possible. I do not discuss the possibility of death when I'm doing my pre op discussion, it's that rare. Good luck.

Indications: there are many indication, but most commonly due to gallstones and there possible sequelae to include abdominal pain, pancreatitis and cholangitis. Other reasons are large gallbladder polyps (precancerous concerns) or gallbladder cancer (far less common that stones). Others may have classic gallbladder type pain and no stones, but a emptying dysfunction called gallbladder dyskinesia

Very low risk: Gallbladder removal is one of the most common operations performed in the us and is, thankfully, very safe. Like all abdominal operations, there are risks of bleeding, infection, blood clots, pneumonia, etc. This is somewhat dependent on the health of the patient, but generally less than 1%. A bile leak may occur less than 1% of the time after surgery; this can often be managed non surgically.
