Smoking mostly: I am not aware of any evidence that consumption of alcohol will change the voice in the absence of smoking, but since heavy smokers are often heavy drinkers, and alcohol increases the toxicity of cigarette smoke, there can be more inflammation in people who do both. Think of Selma Diamond's rough raspy voice as the end-stage of smoking related changes in voice. Consider quitting!!
