No surgery: It depends on how large the meniscus tear is, but if your grandmother also has some arthritis in the knee then surgery just for the meniscus is not likely to provide lasting relief. She should begin physical therapy stretching and strengthening. If she still has pain, a corticosteroid injection or anti-inflammatory also likely would help. An orthopaedic surgeon can counsel you on the options.
