Detox with help: Alcohol withdrawal can be serious, even verry serious, though people have symptoms such as "the shakes" which are bothersome but not dangerous. It depends on many factors including how much, how often, general health and individual response which is hard to predict. So not something to do on his own.Safest and best idea is to detox under medical supervision or go with your to the emergency room

What a + friend!: This is so nice of you and it will help him to have a caring person. Without knowing the amounts and his general health and other details, it's hard to assure his safety if he stops cold-turkey w/o medical monitoring. If possible, I'd urge a doctor's visit to get advice based on an exam of his general health. Having a medical ally and perhaps a therapy referral is good security. Best wishes!
