ER can evaluate: Croup and asthma are different, but can happen in the same child. He can be on asthma medication during viral croup if he gets asthma symptoms like wheezing. If the croup is more than mild, or if there was a prior croup illness needing medications, the Dr. will want to see the child as soon as possible. If an unevaluated child is short of breath, one can call 911 for an ambulance trip to the ER.
