No simple answer.: t-cell receptor studies prove clonality, meaning an expansion of a single line of T-cells, a kind of immune system cell. The test is mainly used to confirm the presence of T-cell cancers, but is not sufficient for cancer diagnosis because it's too sensitive and not specific. Anything that stimulates the immune system, infections, autoimmune diseases, inflammatory states, will produce a positive.
