A member asked:

I have a bun/creatinine ratio of 8. i am a woman age 60 in relative good health. what does this ratio mean?

Not much: It would have been useful for you to provide the actual results of BUN and creatinine. The ratio, for what it is worth is normal, but does not say anything about your BUN and creatinine.

BUN/CREATININE RATIO: BUN = Blood Urea Nitrogen. Urea is a byproduct of ingested protein. Urea is made in the liver and excreted by kidneys. Creatinine is made by muscles and excreted by kidneys. Both are blood markers of kidney function. Creatinine is more reliable, because Urea production varies with protein in diet. Urea/Creat ratio < 10 virtually always reflects low urea production - usu low diet protein
