Depends: Some kids develop transient lactose intolerance during and after a bout of diarrhea. These kids usually regain lactose tolerance within a few days to weeks after the gut heals. Up to 1/4 of the population lose or never had the enzyme needed to digest lactose, and will learn to work around the issue. Lactose free milk or reduced lactose dairy (enzyme added, cheddar cheese, yogurt) make it tolerable.
