Panic attacks result: from intense fight-flight reaction of mind and body, sudden surge of overwhelming anxiety and fear, can be severe. Treat: Calm, support, reassurance, explanation, understanding, lying supine (flat) or Fowler's position (bed head elevated). Doctor may prescribe PO, IM or IV medication (eg, benzodiazepine - Ativan) for relief. Seek mental health follow-up for evaluation to determine treatment need.

Depends: The physician in charge would likely influence the protocol. I expect injected strong tranquilizer might be used and folloed up with oral medication until the patient is stabilized. Different hospitals might have very different policies.
