Your bronchitis: is considered acute. The cough from acute bronchitis can last up to a month. If it goes on longer, please get re-checked by your doctor. Chronic bronchitis would last much longer, but also be recurrent...several months each year, for longer time period. If you quit smoking and stick with it, you will hopefully avoid chronic bronchitis and even worse lung disease!

Acute over chronic: I you smoker at least 1/2 pack for several years you may have COPD which is emphysema &/or chronic bronchitis which is a chronic inflammation of the airways. You may have an acute bronchitis triggered by allergens ,smoke or infection on top of the baseline inflammation. Which might need treatment acutely.
