Worthwhile asking: Doses as high as 3600mg have been used in some studies for neuropathic (nerve) pain, but for nerve pain lingering after shingles, doses above 1800mg typically are no more effective.Gabapentin dose must be raised slowly, and, depending on a number of medical factors, there may be safety reasons for limiting the dose. Asking prescriber is a good idea, raising dose w/o asking is not.

Very safe: for nerve pain plenty of patients end up on doses of 2400mg/d or more. Pls discuss with your doc but the doses you are mentioning are certainly very reasonable.

That is reasonable: Often times when treating people with nerve pain the dose of gabapentin needs to be titrated up until the effective dose is reached (since the effective dose is different for each individual). The maximum recommended dose is 3600mg per day, so 1500mg is well within a safe range.
