Don't open wide: Softer foods are recommended, and ones that do not require wide opening to consume. Small pieces of food that are easily chewed. Avoid gum chewing, nuts, hard pretzels, things that are very chewy. It is important that your muscles rest and are taxed as little as possible when eating. Also, try to avoid yawning and other extreme movements.

Chewy, sticky, hard: A diet change is frequently recommended to people with TMJ issues. Avoiding hard, chewy, sticky foods that require lots of chewing and pressure will not aggravate your joints as much. No chewing gum. Cut food into smaller bites to be easier to chew. Analogy: if you have a bad knee, you probably wouldn't run a marathon. Chewing these type of foods is similar with your compromised jaw.
