Gum disease.: Gum disease tends to be a lifelong problem. I am not sure that rinsing with lemon salt does much for it but I do not see any reason why it would make things worse.

No lemon.: Warm Salt water rinse is ok anytime for comfort, but it will only relieve symptoms temporarily. Don't rinse with or suck on lemon, as this can damage your teeth. See your dentist ASAP. He or she may want to refer you to a periodontist (gum specialist)

Hold the lemon!: Lemon juice is acidic (citric acid) and the acid will not only eat away at his enamel but may also inflame his gums even further. Salt water rinses 2-3 times a day should do no harm, but may not help either. Calculus deposits must be physically scraped off... no amount of rinsing or brushing will remove it. Get him to a dentist soon and get professional cleanings every 3 months.
