No waste: A whole blood donation is usually separated into a unit of packed red blood cells. This leaves the plasma and platelets, which are separated. The plasma can often be "mined" for antibody therapy (IgG, etc.) or other purposes. Rarely in US outside of military operations, whole blood unit is left intact and transfused as such. Thanks for donating!
