Surfactant: We give a medicine called "surfactant" as soon as possible after birth, then we put down a breathing tube to help them breathe. The surfactant is like a kind of "soap" which helps lubricate the lungs and helps them expand. This is part of what's missing in a premature baby's lungs. Of course the severity of prematurity plays into this. The more premature the baby, the more serious the problem
