A member asked:

What is the importance of mitochondria?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Vital: Hi. Mitochondria are the cells' powerhouse (except RBC and platelets, which don't have them). Mitochondria are vitally important. They convert chemical energy in glucose and fats into useful chemical energy (mostly ATP) that can drive uphill reactions. They are poisoned by things like azide and cyanide, and you know what happens with those toxins! Don't mess with the mighty mitochondria!
