A member asked:

Could you please describe what happen to people who lost their mitochondria?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Won't happen: "I left my heart in San Francisco", but you can't lose your mitochondria (or your heart). There are a few diseases in which many mitochondria die off; these usually involve muscle weakness or brain deterioration. The basic biology of several illnesses, including Friederich's ataxia and adult diabetes, is largely about mitochodria.
