2 general types: Generally there are two types of depression. The first is dysthymia, which is a chronic type of depression that varies little in intensity, and major depression, which varies in intensity a great deal.

Depression: Persistent depressive disorder is chronic. Major depressive disorder can be mild, moderate or severe. Severe depressive disorders are sometimes accompanied by psychosis. There can be a single episode of depression or recurrent episodes. It may be associated with seasonal changes or with anxiety. Depression is also part of most bipolar spectrum disorders.
