A plant-based drug: Ephedra species are plants whose medicinal powers were known for millenia. The main active chemical in them was called ephedrine, (ephedrine sulfate) and is closely related in structure to our own neurotransmitters epinephrine and norepinephrine (aka adrenaline and noradrenaline), as well as amphetamine and its cousins. It is a decongestant mainly, but also a stimulant, increasing wakefulness, pulse and BP.
