External support: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation: a person presses down on the chest & releases ~100x/minute to cause the pt's heart to be squeezed & externally cause blood circulation when not beating on its own. Rescue breaths allow oxygen & carbon dioxide exchange when pt not breathing. CPR 'buys time' to get Medics to pt & pt to ER while trying to identify & correct cause of heart stopping. About 6-16% survive.
