See a podiatrist: Learn how to trim nails. Avoid shoes that may be pressing the toes. Get feet checked properly and if a sliver of nail is causing the problem, it can be properly cut. A keratolytic can be used to soften the nail and improve the nail fold. If ingrown nails are a chronic problem, the podiatrist may recommend an avulsion or a permanent removal of the nail. These are in-office procedures.
