What in the brain causes someone to be transgender?

Unknown: Sexual and gender identity is a highly complex multifactorial process. If there's a purely brain based cause, we don't have a clue.

Great question!: You are correct that there seem to be differences in the brains of transgender vs non-transgender folks. It may be related to hormone exposure early in development, but this is an area where we really don't have an answer yet. We do know, however, that being transgender is not a "lifestyle choice" any more than it is to be cis-gender (non-transgender). LGromkoMD
