Persistent: Persistent symptoms despite conservative treatment, should be further evaluated. You should make sure you minimize use of alcohol, anti inflammatory medications, spicy foods, acidic foods. If you ever notice black stools, immediate evaluation is needed.

If it persists: Once in a while, if triggered by known precipitants such as "spicy buffalo wings," excessive alcohol, etc. that is normal, but if you are consistently getting symptoms, from even foods that you did not in the past, then it is time to see the Doctor for an examination, proper diagnosis, and treatment. Of course it is always recommended to avoid all the classically known trigger foods. Best wishes.
