A 37-year-old member asked:

what does it mean if it says "esch coli isolated" in an infant's stool culture report?

Common germ in poo: E.coli is a common stool germ. Its presence in the poo is expected. There are pathogenic (bad) strains of E.coli but this would be reported separately.

A 69-year-old female asked:

My urine test showed nitrates and leucocytes, but the culture was normal. I'm still very uncomfortable. Should I keep taking antibiotics ?

Treat it: Symptoms of urgency, frequency and burning with the urinary nitrites and leukocytes should be treated. Such infections sometimes do not yield a culture because the specimen was taken after you took the antibiotics or specimen was not collected or transported properly. Symptomatic urinary tract infection should be treated.

Is it ok to make a 2 month old baby sit upright. Won't it hurt her back bone?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Rodrigo Argenal
Pediatrics 22 years experience
Not natural: Sitting is not natural for a 2 mo old. Laying on a surface semi-upright is. If you sit him supporting him (like on your lap while holding him), then it is ok. I would not advise sitting him by himself on a high chair for example.

False hematochezia: Certain foods can color your stool red and can mimic hematochezia (bright red blood in the stool):red gelatin or jello, popsicles, or kool-aid, tomato juice or soup, and large amounts beets. If the red stool persists after avoiding the culprit food item for a few days, it is wise to report this to your doctor for further work-up.
