See below:: There is no specific treatment for this condition. Critical care docs monitor the pressure in the brain, blood gases, and blood acid-base balance (ph). Treatments may include: •breathing support (a breathing machine may be needed during a deep coma) •fluids by IV to provide electrolytes and glucosesteroids to reduce swelling in the brain.

Pray: By the time Reye syndrome develops, there is a downward spiral most kids follow.Treatment when it was common consisted of supportive care. IV fluids, blood pressure support, breathing support, etc. Most died but a few survived within a week. Research was hampered by small numbers and rapid decline.Today it is quite rare.

Acute liver failure: Recognized in the early 60's this pattern of acute liver failure/coma & death often struck kids recovering from the flu or chickenpox. After improving they went through a rapid decline in aleartness & were found to have liver failure. An association with Aspirin products led to almost total elimination it it's use in kids<16yo. It is now rarely if ever seen even at the largest children's hospitals.
