Is it dangerous to breastfeed after an epidural?

No: It is perfectly safe to breastfeed your baby if you have had an epidural. The medication you have been given has been carefully dosed and placed such that your baby is not likely to experience any side effects from it. In fact, the earlier you start breastfeeding after your baby's birth, the better!

No: Go right ahead and breastfeed. The epidural medication is not going to affect your breastmilk or your baby.

No: In short, epidurals are used because they result in minimal pain medication amounts that are the safest for the baby.

Epidural: While some of the anesthetic instilled by an epidural is absorbed into the maternal bloodstream , very little will pass into mother's milk. Feel free to breast feed and bond with your baby!
