Different things: Sutures are generally broken down in categories, such as braided vs monofliament and permanent vs absorbable. Nylon is an example of a permanent monofilament. Silk is a permanent braided suture. There are also braided and monofilament absorbable sutures that are engineered from different materials. Sometimes wire is even used, but not as much as in the past.
