Several reasons: Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, in a newborn has several causes. One of the more common reasons is if the mom had gestational diabetes. In that case, the baby makes more Insulin in order to control the high sugar level his body is exposed to. After birth, it takes time for the Insulin production to slow down, leading to hypoglycemia. Infection or poor feeding are also possible causes.
