SSRI: Fluoxetine is the first of the "newer generation" of antidepressants developed around 1990, called selective (or specific) serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI). It works by increasing the amount of serotonin available at brain synapses. Fluoxetine and other SSRIs are powerful anti-depressant and anti-anxiety agents.
