Depends: They are both complementary techniques. MRA is more invasive and expensive and should NOT be the first image modality

CTA and: conventional angiography are best for carotid artery stenosis imaging. Ultrasound or Doppler is a great screening test and typically is performed first. MRA often overestimates carotid stenosis due to turbulent flow in areas of narrowing. MRA best for carotid dissection and for patients that cannot receive X ray contrast. CTA is used more often due to invasive nature of conventional angiography.
