A few thoughts: Could be a muscle 'bunching up' due to a torn tendon-these are sometimes painless.Could actually be fluid above the knee due to a patellar inj.Could be bruised muscle, nerve injury, etc.If more muscles are involved, it could be mineral deficiency or dehydration.Applying heat & massage may help.If not,a good history & phys. incl osteopathic hands-on exam may provide some answers & direct treatment.
