in ballet class, i experienced a popping sound and painless sensation in the area of my left achilles tendon. what could this be?

Sprain vs. tear: It would be best to see a Podiatrist for a quick evaluation and diagnosis as this could be a sprain or represent a small tear. additional possibilities include tendonitis or even an impingement syndrome. With an accurate diagnosis your MD can determine if stretching, an anti-inflammatory, rest/ice/massage or some time with a Physical therapist is the next step. Keep me posted if you can.
