Our rainbow lorrikeet bird bit the corner of my eyelid, how do l prevent an infection?

Treat: Treat the lid as any other skin wound. Wash the area and put an antibiotic ointment on the wound. If you are concerned the ointment will get in the eye, ask your doctor to prescribe an ophthalmic ointment that can get in the eye without harm.

Get it checked: If the bird actually lacerated the margin of your eyelid, you need to get this checked because it might not heal properly unless treated. Most OTC antibiotic ointments are not safe for the eye, so you would need an eye exam to have an appropriate on prescribed for you as well. Be careful around birds. They have been known to inflict some pretty severe injuries on human eyes.
