His decision: Hi. It's difficult to watch people you love engage in self destructive behavior, but you can't stop smoking for him or eat a healthy diet for him. He has to do those things for himself. You can educate and give encouragement and support, but ultimately it's up to him to decide to live healthier. He should also control diabetes and blood pressure tightly. Good luck!

Agree with doc: Suggest he start exercising, and to commence, work with a physical therapist, in a swimming pool if necessary, later on floor, and maybe obtain a personal trainer. Stroke does not prohibit all exercise. Secondly, he may benefit from some supportive counseling. Yes, his prior habits are indeed dangerous, and he will need help in stopping these.
