Automatic vs manual: Automactic blood-pressure measuring devices and manual ones are typically used for measuring your BP with a cuff. In the critically ill patient, a catheter maybe inserted in the blood vessel/heart to measure the pressure. Otherwise, there isn't much else. Chronic high BP can cause heart/kidney problems so we use ekg to check heart, ultrasound to check kidneys, but not measuring bp. Good luck.

A few blood tests: In addition to monitoring your blood pressure, you should have your cholesterol and blood sugar checked as high cholesterol and diabetes go along with high blood pressure often. Kidney function should also be monitored over time. A baseline ekg is helpful as well. An echocardiogram may be needed later in life to evaluate for heart failure.
