Allergies : Postnasal drainage can cause sore throat/ irritation triggering off a coughing spell to the point of choking and gagging on your own mucus. Try taking Claritin, Zyrtec or Allegra to see if it helps. May need nasal spray like Nasacort (triamcinolone) AQ which is now available over the counter to help decrease boggy turbinates.See PCP if no better.
