You get better: acute bronchitis is viral in cause the majority of the time which means it is self limiting or you get better with time. this is not a bacterial infection that needs antibiotics. It is frustrating to "do nothing" but wait , however the bodys natural healing properties are the best medicine

Symptoms: would likely persist and you could be at higher risk for developing an infection which may require antibiotics. Make sure you complete any regimen your doctor gives you and if it doesn't work, let them know. Best of luck!

Depends: Most cases are viral and self limited. Some are caused by bacteria and may progress to full blown pneumonia if untreated.

Better or worse: Sometimes bronchitis can resolve itself, particularly if it's caused by a virus. On the other hand, it can worsen leading to shortness of breath and possibly pneumonia. If it has been going on for more than 5 days, you should be evaluated by a primary care provider. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!
