One doctor: if that doctor is experienced with working with autism and the child has notable symptoms/ signs. However, be aware that higher functioning levels of autism may not be easy to diagnose and it may take multiple sessions to get a good understanding of the child. Take care.

It is optimal to : have a team evaluation by a Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrician or Child Psychiatrist & a Pediatric Neuropsychologist or Psychologist, OT & SLT to assess degree of autistic behaviors, level of cognition & specific supports needed. However, a Child Psych, DB Pede or Pede Neurologist can make a medical diagnosis by DSM-V criteria. Child (neuro) psychologists do the ADOS & cognitive testing.
