Sign of infection: An elevated white blood cell count (leukocytosis) can be a sign of infection. Did your doctor do the test because of symptoms of an infection or was it found on a routine physical? In any case, see your doctor for further evaluation.

Abnormal: It could get elevated in acute infection or in use of steroids. If non of the above and numbers persist see a hematologist. A little more history and the differentials would have been helpful
