Thumb: Distract him when he places his thumb in his mouth. Give him something alternative to comfort him like a blanket. Place a nontoxic bad tasting solution on his thumb, Tabasco sauce being 1 option. All the best, be persistent as it may be tough.

Communicate: The best way to distract him is to keep him busy by talking to him , play with him, play a music that he likes. Give him toys to play that he likes & have to use his hands playing it. Even though, he may not be talking, tell him that thumb sucking is not good. I am against applying any bad tasting stuff on the thumb. Children may turn to Thumb sucking when they have nothing else to do.

Most: Most children discontinue thumb habit on their own. See if he'll take a pacifier, easier to get rid of than thumb. Right now he needs his thumb for comfort. As long as he discontinues by age 4 there will be no permanent problem. Important that he have 1st Dental Examination no later than his 1st b'day. Recommend that he be seen by a pediatric dental specialist, a Pedodontist.
