FSH: Premature menopause, would exist in anyone felt to be menopausal below age 40. The FSH level is the single best test for this. As stated in other perimenopausal answers, though, the test is variable and can be abnormal one month, only to be perfectly normal the next. So abnormal tests are helpful and normal are not. Symptoms are very important and should be highly correlated with testing.
