Lateral malleolus in: x-ray : no obvious fracture by history----but you could have a bone bruise--which is a minor crush injury to the bone cortex-----it could take 2-3 week for the soreness to go away----

Maybe: Xray can't show everything. New injury often just a black line/crack, while older injury has white (calcium deposits) edges indicating effort at healing. Supportive care (rest/ice/elevation) and a little time (2-3 days). If not improving, see your Dr / Ortho for further eval and to consider an MRI later.
