A member asked:

What blood tests can be used to determine dehydration? can dehydration throw off the results of a fibrotest or similar liver blood tests?

Dehydration.: There is no single test, but dehydration may be intimated by changes in sodium and potassium, calcium, uric acid, creatinine, BUN and the BUN / Cr ratio. This will not interfere in any significant way with liver function tests and not at all with a fibroscan.

Hemoconcentration: Usually, the blood counts are the ones mainly affected by dehydration due to hemoconcentration resulting from dehydration. Your hydration status can easily be determined by the color of your urine and your urine specific gravity. Drinking 8 glasses of water a day would normally be sufficient but when you are under the sun and imbibing alcohol, you'll be doubly dehydrated. Alcohol is a dehydrant.
